Nobody does a product launch like GoPro, on Monday, 6 July, GoPro launched their newest model, the Hero4 Session. This is the latest action camera from the industry leaders, and is sure to excite outdoor film enthusiasts! This is GoPro’s first waterproof camera (no casing needed) and is also their smallest ever action camera. The camera has sides measuring a mere 38mm, and weighs only 74g. This makes it about the same size as a golf ball.
The camera films in HD, producing 1080p 60fps footage, and is also able to take 8MP still photos, which is better than the current entry level GoPro Hero. Battery life ranges between 1h30 and 2h, depending on film quality and wifi use, with recharge time estimated to be around 90 minutes. Unlike the current Hero4 models, the Session doesn’t have a removable battery, one of the factors which helps the unit to be waterproof to 10 metres without a case. The Session is operated with 2 buttons, and also includes a small display unit which shows battery life, camera mode and memory availability.
The new smaller design is the first major change in shape and design that GoPro have released since they launched their first edition of the Hero in 2005.
The price when they do land in South Africa is expected to be R6499. Although the Session will be available for purchase in the US on July 12, release dates in South Africa are only expected to be closer to the end of July.
