Superbike makes a return to South Africa

The SuperBike racing will make its way back to South Africa’s glorious Phakisa Raceway after  a ten year hiatus with the announcement of the 2014 World SuperBike World Championship.

The world famous superbike racing championship is arguably the biggest motorbike racing series alongside the MotoGP and now SA motorbike fans will have chance to catch it live in the coming year.

Javier Alonso, WSBK Executive Director: “We are delighted to come back to South Africa at Phakisa Freeway, where we had very good experiences in the past. We are therefore confident about the success of the event bearing in mind the existing culture and passion for motorcycling in South Africa. We are planning to visit the circuit in the following days together with the FIM representatives in order to move forward with the homologation, contractual and event preparation procedures.”

Phakisa Raceway itself last hosted MotoGP racing in 2004 and will be hosting a series race on the 19th of October 2014.

The new season will see defending champ Tom Sykes gun it against 2013 rivals Eugene Laverty form North Ireland and Sylvain Guintoli from France. South Africa’s own racer Sheridan Morais of Kawasaki will also contest the championship.
